SAN DIEGO – Record breaking unemployment rates, 4.2 percent in San Diego, create an incredible opportunity for those who are unemployed. Employers are revisiting their job requirements and are also more willing to consider potential employees that have no prior work experience or unrelated experience. This is the perfect time to change careers, especially for those that are unhappy in their work but fierce competition made it impossible in the past. It is also a golden opportunity for college graduates to test the job market because they are unsure of where they would like to place their talent. Even though unemployment is very, very low, more than 50,000 people in San Diego are looking for work and are willing to take entry level positions to get their foot in the door.


“Goodwill San Diego has four Community Employment Centers in the county. They provide free services that include job search assistance, résumé building, and interview preparation. The one-on-one counseling that the job seeker receives in our centers is what keeps the job seeker coming back to us for further development,” said Toni Giffin, President and CEO. “Our Career Advisors are well equipped to direct the job seeker to free workshops we provide to strengthen soft skills. Today’s employer is most interested in a job seeker’s ability to resolve conflict in the workplace, use a computer and communicate clearly.”


Our new Community Employment Center in San Ysidro will open on Thursday, September 13 at 9 am. This center provides state-of-the-art computer equipment, a training classroom that will hold free community workshops as well as provide a meeting place after hours for the community. All South Bay hiring events will now take place at the San Ysidro Center. Our existing center in Chula Vista will close on September 14.

We are known throughout the community for getting people with disabilities and other barriers jobs. What many members of the community do not know, is Goodwill is always looking for highly qualified, talented leaders.

Our Community Employment Centers are unique because in addition to assisting the job seeker find work, our Career Advisors also work with local businesses to help them find employees. Business leaders have come to recognize Goodwill San Diego as a good resource when looking to hire. In order to meet the employer’s requirements, Goodwill’s Job Readiness Program is an opportunity for the job seeker to prepare for work as they look for work. The two-week program provides free workshops and one-on-one coaching. Once completed, the job seeker receives a certificate and full recommendation by the Career Advisor to potential employers.


Additionally, our Center’s hold regular hiring events that seek to fill open positions within Goodwill San Diego. We currently have more than 50 open positions including:

Sales Person – responsible for processing sales through the use of cash register and electronic scanner, taking cash, check or electronic payment and providing excellent customer service.
Processor – sorts, cleans, prices and stocks donated goods in a processing area. Accepts donations and provides excellent customer service.
Donation Center Attendant – accepts donations, assists donors by unloading product and providing a receipt as well as excellent customer service.
Warehouse Processor – sorts donated product by category in a warehouse setting, cash register operation and processing of recycled merchandise in a timely manner.
Truck Driver Helper – assists truck driver by providing back up assistance, loading and unloading of light to heavy donated product.


Goodwill recruiters are currently conducting weekly hiring events in Point Loma, Escondido and Otay Mesa every Tuesday beginning at 9 am. To attend, the job seeker must bring a printed application from and must arrive before 9 am.
